Heart Anotomy

-Coronary arteries and veins are the blood vessels that supply blood and carry blood away from the heart muscle. The left coronary arteries supply blood mainly to the left side of the heart and vice versa.

STRUCTURE
FUNCTION
DEOXY/OXY BLOOD
LEFT ATRIUM
*collects returning oxygen rich blood
*Forces blood into mitral valve into left ventricle.
Oxy
LEFT VENTRICLE
* Largest and strongest chamber in heart.
* Ventricle wall only half inch thick but still forces blood through aortic valve.
Oxy
RIGHT ATRIUM
* Collets oxygen poor blood.
* Forces it through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle.
Deoxy
RIGHT VENTRICLE
* Collects oxygen poor blood from right atrium.
* Forces it into pulmonary valve and into lungs.
Deoxy
PULMONARY ARTERY
* Carries blood from heart to lungs to pick up oxygen.
Deoxy
AORTA
* Largest artery
* Carries oxygen rich blood from heart to rest of body
Oxy
PULMONARY VEINS
* Carry oxygen rich blood from lungs back to heart.
Oxy
SUPERIOR VENA CAVA
* Oxygen poor blood returns from upper parts of body to heart.
Deoxy

INFERIOR VENA CAVA
* Oxygen poor blood returns from lower parts of body to heart.
Deoxy
ATRIOVENTRICULAR VALVES (Mitral & Tricuspid)
Tricuspid- controls blood flow from right atrium to right ventricle.
Mitral- Controls blood flow from left atrium to the ventricle.
Deoxy/Oxy
CHORDAE TENDINAE
- bring right ventricular walls closer together during contraction
-pull the AV Valves open during atriole systole.
Left oxy
Right deoxy
SEMI LUNAR VALVES (Pulmonary & Aortic)
Pulmonary-Controls blood flow from right ventricle into pulmonary arteries.
Aortic- Largest artery, oxygen rich blood from heart goes to rest of body.
deoxy/oxy
SEPTUM
* Separates left and right atria and ventricles.
